Zhou Zixiong, Body without Organs-Free Body 1, oil on canvas, 100x100cm, 2022

The concept of the “Body without Organs” originates from the philosophical theories of Gilles Deleuze. In this context, “without” does not imply the absence of organs within the body. Rather, the body is not in opposition to organs per se, but against the organization that forms organs, since “organ” refers both to a physical organ and to “body or organization.” The Body without Organs is a body without fixed organization; it no longer needs organs to be attached to organs; it is liberated from the organism, manifesting as a state of the body that occurs freely in various domains. The body is a free event, a body without an organism. It is no longer composed of organs in the physiological sense. The body without organs can be interpreted as a body of freedom, desire, and intensity; a body that is normatively organized, regulated, and de-organized; a body with aesthetic significance; and a body related to social and political life. The body is always a system that encompasses a multitude of functions.
